Seller's Guide

Welcome to selling on Smashion! We've put together some tips and strategies to help make your selling experience with us more rewarding and fun. If there's a tip you'd like to share with your fellow Smashionistas, contact Smashion Support and we'll add it to this guide.

Create Listings

Photos

Photos are the most important thing to describe your item and to attract buyers. Good quality pictures are worth a thousand words. Use your most clear, most compelling photos of the item. Buyers can't pick it up, try it on, smell it, examine it so your photos need to be able to provide enough information to fulfill those needs.

Dos:
  • Do upload multiple photos. Take picture from different angles or zoom in on interesting details.
  • Do use yourself or a friend as a model and take pictures of the item. (For example, If you're selling a shirt, snap a picture of someone wearing it so that buyers can see how it fits.)
  • Do make sure the photo uploads so that clothes aren't sideways or upside-down. If someone needs to crane their neck to see what a skirt looks like, they're less likely to buy it.
  • Do include a link of an item from the retailer's page (if available), in your listing description. They usually will have better images and buyers can see a price comparison.
Don'ts:
  • Don't just place items on the floor and take a picture of them there. Think: would a picture like that entice you to want to buy the item?
  • Don't post blurry pictures. Again, if someone can't see the item clearly, they're not going to want to buy it.

Listing Title

Title is probably the second most important thing to describe your listing after the pictures. Choosing a good title helps people find what they are looking for.

Smashion automatically submits your listings to Google Product Search, making your listings viewable and searchable by millions of people outside Smashion. We are constantly looking for other online services and channels to expose your listings to wider audience. Such outside services or partners may have more strict rules than ours on what's considered appropriate content. Therefore, it is a good idea to observe the following best practices to ensure the broadest exposure of your listings.

Dos:
  • Do include only the most important attributes like brand, color and name, or the most distinctive attributes you feel like. Leave the rest in the item description.
  • Do be descriptive but not promotional. Google Product Search rejects any listings containing promotional or boilerplate text in the title, such as "On sale", "Free shipping", "Great deal", etc.
  • Do use lower-case lettering. Avoid all uppercase and exclamation marks. Again, Google Product Search rejects any listings with title or description in all uppercase.
Don'ts:
  • Don't write a title that is too short or too long – keep it between 15 and 75 characters.

Tags

Tags provide another way to describe and organize your items. Users can search by tags or browse by tags. We strongly recommend you to always tag your listings.

Dos:
  • Do use multiple words in a tag. For example, you can use one tag "denim skirt" instead of two tags "denim" and "skirt". A multi-world tag can be more descriptive and increase the ranking of your listing in search results.
  • Do remember that Smashion tags are not case sensitive when used in browsing or search. So "denim skirt" is as good as "Denim Skirt" or "DENIM SKIRT". We suggest using either lower case or mixed case for better readability.
Don'ts:
  • Don't use too many tags on a single item. It only clutters the content.
  • Don't repeat the categories in tags. For example, if you are selling Women's shorts, there is no need to tag the items as "women's shorts" or "shorts" or "women's clothing", because your item is already in the "Women, Apparel, Shorts" category.

Making Sales

While we are doing our best to bring customers to you, it's in your best interest to market yourself as well. The more you promote and market your online store, the more people will know about it.

Dos:
  • Do promote and market your store via your personal social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, LinkedIn, your personal blog, etc). Remember: Your easy-to-remember Smashion store URL is http://www.smashion.com/market/store/USERNAME. Feel free to bookmark it, link it from your other Web pages, or share it with your friends.
  • Do customize your storefront by uploading a banner image and avatar, and adding a welcome message. The "customize store" link is always accessible from your Seller Central page. A memorable banner and avatar is your first opportunity to show people what you and your listings are about. Draw people in by making your store attractive and representative of your personal style.
  • Do use one of our Smashion badges to place on your blog or social profile. You can find them here.
  • Do join in on the Smashion community fun in our forums and gallery. You can connect with other sellers in the forums, swap tips on how to best market yourselves, and get feedback on your listings, photos, and descriptions – it's also a great place to get yourself seen! (The more you post in the forums, the more people will begin to notice your avatar and your work.
  • Do take advantage of the RSS Feed feature. Find the RSS Feed link on your store front (that's the feed of your own store). If you are also on Twitter, Facebook, or other sites, you can add the feed to your profile so that whenever you list a new item on Smashion, it automatically shows up on all the other places for your fans or followers to see.
  • Do encourage your Facebook fans to become a fan of Smashion. The more people who know about us, the more customers you'll have!
Don'ts:
  • Don't be discouraged by a low number of views. Instead, learn how to promote yourself better. Is your store URL on your Facebook profile? Are you tweeting it out to your friends? Have you posted your store URL as a signature for your email? Also remember we are working very hard on your behalf to promote Smashion. Feel free to share with us any good ideas you have!

Communicating with Buyers

Dos:
  • Do answer customer questions immediately. Most buyers have low patience or are maybe on a tight deadline. Slow responses to inquiries will result in lost sales and negative feedback.
  • Do ship your orders within 2 business days of receiving the payment. Prompt shipping is required by the Market Agreement. It will also earn you good feedback.
  • Do communicate with buyers first to resolve any differences directly. Many times it is just a matter of good communication. Contact Smashion Support if you are unable to work things out.
