An Interview with Jennifer of The Looks For Less

Hi fellow Smashionistas! My name is Jennifer...My passion is high fashion, but there’s not much left in my checking account after I pay the bills. This economy begs for a little creativity with our wardrobe. I cover everything from styling your favorite dress to create a variety of unique looks, DIY projects, and of course celebrity and designer looks for less. Every post is infused with a bit of my own personal style, which ranges from contemporary to preppy to rock-star glamour. Come visit me at The Looks For Less.

This interview was published on Friday, April 01, 2011.

What do you do when you're not blogging? What is your job?

Jennifer: Blogging is my evening hobby and my 9-5 is working at a major University as a web applications developer. I started by blog as an experiment in blogging and social media, but it quickly became so much more than that. It is the perfect outlet for my fashion obsession!

What label(s)/store(s) do you favor?

Jennifer: I tend to favor affordable fashion stores such as Charlotte Russe and Forever 21. I'm also a sample sales-aholic - they're the perfect way to get designer apparel & accessories at deeply discounted prices. If I ever splurge it is usually on BCBG (trendy, yet reasonable prices for a designer brand).

Great fashion steal:

Jennifer: I feature fashion steals all the time on my site. Check out my blog for recreating a celebrity's outfit at an affordable price, designer looks for less, and our newest feature "As Seen On" - where we highlight a celebrity that is wearing apparel, accessories, or footwear for under $100!

Are there any style icons that inspire you? Who and how?

Jennifer: My style is all over the place, depending on the occasion. I love Rihanna's edgy style when I'm going out with my girls or on a date. I love Kristin Cavallari's California cool style for everyday casual looks. I'm also a big fan of Vanessa Hudgens. She piles on the layers, yet never looks overdone.

How are you able to stay fashionable without spending a lot of $$? What are your tips and where do you shop?

Jennifer: A few ways that I stay fashionable without spending money are 1. Shop around - a Google shopping search will usually find you the best deal on whatever it is you are looking for. 2. Hold out for free shipping deals if shopping online. 3. I love sample sales! 4. Search for promo codes.

In your opinion, which era had the best fashion?

Jennifer: I am a big fan of 60s style. I try to emulate the looks in a modern way. Most gals at the time had really light or dark hair, mine is dark, with a bit of volume at the crown, they were tan, wore light lipstick and heavy smokey eyes. I don't think the look will ever go out of style - very classic!

What do you think is the hardest part about blogging?

Jennifer: Blogging is my evening hobby, so it is often difficult to quickly post the latest and greatest when I work during the day. The business side is also very difficult to keep up with. My inbox is always exploding and it is difficult to respond to all and blog, yet the interest is so flattering.

What is the most rewarding part?

Jennifer: Getting to know my readers is beyond rewarding. They are the reason I do what I do. I try to keep my site as interactive as possible, responding to all emails, blog and Facebook comments, and tweets. I have definitely made some buds that share my passion for fashion and I love it!

4 favorite fashion accessories:

Jennifer: I'm not a big fan of necklaces. I think it's because I love embellished wrists and big earrings. I'm a big fan of gold, so you can usually find me in a big gold watch, big gold bangle, and big gold earrings, usually hoops, lol.

What 5 items do you always have in your purse?

Jennifer: Besides the obvious keys and wallet, I usually carry lipgloss, random nail polishes (not sure how or why those usually end up in my purse, but manicures are another obsession of mine), random jewelry, bobby pins, and concealer on certain days lol.
