An Interview with Emily of Hazy Laughter
Call it a soul-searching mission, a justification of addiction, a means of expression. I’m Emily Ulrich, a student blogger over at Hazy Laughter and Fancier Things. With the help of narrative and photographic experimentations, my blog has become the life support for expanding my creativity and individuality in the field of fashion.
What do you do when you're not blogging? What is your job?
Emily: I'm actually a full-time student, approaching my final year of high school. That aside, I worked at my parents' coffee shop, both before school and after. I got off with considerable luck, though. For example, if things were slow, I was always allowed to work on things like my blog or schoolwork.
How would you describe your personal style?
Emily: With indecision. Ha ha! Honestly, as a person, I'm still developing, and my style is constantly growing with me. I used to be huge on subtlety, but now I find myself more forthright in mixing classic elements with quirkier, experimental pieces.
Are there any style icons that inspire you? Who and how?
Emily: I love Audrey Hepburn for her success in embracing the atypical perceptions of beauty and sex. She dressed with confidence and class, and let a new figure of woman be recognized as sexy. For modern icons, Elena Perminova all the way. She's perfected the everyday adaptation of high-style couture.
Flats or stilettos?
Emily: If my lifestyle allowed, I'd wear stilettos all the time. Weird as it may sound, I'm very attracted to lengthy, drawn out shapes, and the way stilettos elongate the body is so beautiful to me. But I do appreciate flats for their ease and practicality.
In your opinion, every woman should own:
Emily: Sheepskin gloves. My hands are brutally beaten by New England winters, there's no doubt I'd lose a couple fingers in the cold if I didn't have a sturdy pair of gloves. That, and a recipe book keepsake. Everyone should have a collection of their best recipes -- I just started my own!
One trend you would like to never see again is:
Emily: Litas. I love heels and I love platforms (when done well), but for me, a shoe should enhance a woman's beauty. And, while I liked them initially, in my opinion, the Lita has reached a point of eccentricity that I don't find flattering.
Do you keep your older clothes or do you like to keep your closet small and organized?
Emily: I keep everything. But the problem is, I still have relatively small closet space and I like everything organized... so I've reached this point where my closet is overwhelmed by all I'm trying to fit in it.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Emily: Blasting some Santana on iTunes, and air guitar-ing my electric baby to pieces... it's as if I can play without really being able to.
If you could have one wish granted, what would it be?
Emily: To just hear a language and automatically pick it up fluently.
People would be surprised to know that I...
Emily: Am an undeniable nerd. And I don’t say this lightly. Years of my life were devoted to Jhonen Vasquez and his gnarled gothic art style -- I'm a huge fan of those edgier, black comedy genres. Gaming, graphic novels, anime... let's just say it's my goal to make it to Comic Con one year.
I can't live without...
Emily: My family. Typical answer, but so true. Them, and my Tempurpedic pillow. I bring it with me on every vacation -- don’t think I’d be able to sleep without it!
My favorite moment of the day:
Emily: Definitely dinner. During the day, my family is always off in different directions, so it’s nice to have that time together. Plus, I love to cook and bake; I’m always the left-hand help in the kitchen.
