An Interview with Janis of Dress Me Dearly
Janis Galloway is founder of popular fashion blog, Dress Me Dearly.com and Wardrobe Stylist at her agency, Dress Me Dearly Styling. Canadians have come to love Dress Me Dearly for Janis' quirky take on personal style and coverage of her local fashion scene. In 2010, Dress Me Dearly was named one of the Top 15 Canadian Fashion Blogs by Fashionism.ca.
What do you do when you're not blogging? What is your job?
Janis: I work as the Marketing and Communications Coordinator at the Art Gallery of Alberta promoting all its amazing exhibitions, events and programming!
What would be the one fashion tip you would give to a friend?
Janis: Rock your own unique style, don't just follow the trends. That's boring.
Where are you from and what are your top three favorite places to shop in your city?
Janis: I grew up in a small, rural town, but now reside in Edmonton, Canada. My fave shopping spots in the city are: Divine: a locally owned shop filled with rare vintage goodies; Red Pony Consignment: a great locally-owned consignment store; Joe Fresh at Superstore: just can't beat those prices.
Biggest style splurge and/or deal:
Janis: My biggest splurge is a beautiful, white lace matching skirt and top by Canadian designer, Eve Gravel. It's very Jackie O. Well worth it! Best deal is a brilliant blue, button-up coat from a consignment store in a tiny town called Cochrane. It was only $40, and I have worn it steady for 5 years!
How are you able to stay fashionable without spending a lot of $$? What are your tips and where do you shop?
Janis: I'm all about vintage and consignment. It's a treasure hunt, and you can find the most amazing deals. I also consign many of my clothes to spend on more! I love the idea of recycling fashion and someone else enjoying your wardrobe when you're done with it.
What types of items do you like to save $ on and what do you splurge on?
Janis: I will always splurge on good winter boots, a warm jacket and Canadian-made fashion. Other than that I'm pretty fashion frugal.
What 5 items do you always have in your purse?
Janis: Wallet, business cards, lip gloss, camera, cellphone. Not very exciting!
4 things you can't live without:
Janis: My MacBook for sure! And also friends, coffee, and the internet.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Janis: Jersey Shore... I can't believe I just admitted that.
On my days off, you'll find me...
Janis: Blogging, going to see a local band, or hanging with friends.
I am passionate about:
Janis: My friends, family and obviously fashion.
What's the oldest thing you're wearing today? Is there a story behind it?
Janis: Funny you ask! I'm wearing a bracelet I've had since I was about 10. My dad bought it for me in Tijuana on a family vacation. I remember him bargaining for it! It's a silver bracelet with multi-coloured, stone hearts linked together - a happy little memento from my childhood.
