An Interview with Stefanie of theStyleSafari

Stefanie is the curator behind the fashion, personal style, travel and DIY blog theStyleSafari.com. Being the daughter of a flight attendant, Stefanie has been fortunate to travel the world and see global trends and points of view -- all of which inspire her style. After years of traveling, designing, and of course shopping, she finally decided to start theStyleSafari to keep track of her daily inspiration and personal style.

This interview was published on Friday, February 10, 2012.

What do you do when you're not blogging? What is your job?

Stefanie: I am currently a Buyer for a department store in downtown San Francisco- but I will be moving to New York next month and looking for a new job. I am also a dance teacher and designer on the side!

What would be the one fashion tip you would give to a friend?

Stefanie: If I could give one fashion tip, it would be to have confidence! Too many times I have heard people say "I couldn't pull that off"- and it's true, you can't, unless you have confidence! As long as you feel good wearing something, everyone else will too.

What is your fantasy splurge?

Stefanie: Can I say a house? I LOVE fashion, but I'm not big on splurging. I always think you can get something similar for less, and personally I enjoy the hunt- then I don't feel guilty later! (ok, but I do really like the Reed Krakoff Boxer totes in leather/wool mix. I haven't found a cheaper version yet!)

Three things in your closet you cannot live without:

Stefanie: Tough question- my tastes change daily! Right now, maybe my Steve Madden leopard loafers, my Zara navy blue cropped trousers, and my Old Navy Plaid button downs. The perfect casual/professional outfit!

How long does it take you to decide on an outfit to post?

Stefanie: The thing about blogging is that sometimes you are SO full of inspiration, and sometimes you have none at all-in which case it can take an hour or more to come up with a great look. When I have a good idea for a post, I always write it down or take a picture-so I have a bank of looks to choose from.

What's your latest obsession?

Stefanie: Apparently my iPhone. I lost it this past weekend and no idea how dependent I was on it. Everything from my notes to my Instagrams to my inspiration was on there and I never put any of it onto the 'cloud'! Plus the camera is so good that sometimes I even take my blog posts pictures with it!

On my days off, you'll find me...

Stefanie: Eating! Almost everything my boyfriend and I both enjoy revolves around food. The San Francisco Ferry Building farmer's market is a favorite, as are food trucks, hosting BBQ's, going to nice dinners and cooking gourmet meals at home. When in doubt- we eat!

My go-to product in my beauty arsenal:

Stefanie: Organix Moroccan oil. My hair is extremely dry and I put this in after I wash my hair to hold in moisture and shine. Also Pssssssst Dry Shampoo is a savior when you don't have time for a shower!

What are you reading right now?

Stefanie: CHANEL A Woman of Her Own by Axel Madsen

What's the oldest thing you're wearing today? Is there a story behind it?

Stefanie: Interestingly, my mom used to be a jewelry designer and has some of the best vintage jewelry and stones I have ever seen. I am currently wearing one of her long strands of pearls that I wrap around my neck 4 times. It adds the right touch of class to almost any outfit!

How do you find your inspirations for your great DIY projects?

Stefanie: When I see something that I want but can't afford, my next question is always "How can I make that myself?" Sometimes I find a great way to re-create something and sometimes I don't; but I think that it's the instinct to try to find a cheaper, more personal way to do things that makes a great DIYer.

3 fun facts about you:

Stefanie: 1. My eyes are so bad I've been called legally blind 2. I teach hip hop and technique dance classes to teenagers 3. I am a sticker for spelling- get that grammar right!
