An Interview with Katie of Off Switch

Hi there! My name is Katie, and I chronicle my life as a midwesterner and creative gal over at Off Switch. I feel blessed to know what I want to achieve in my life, and determined to see my dreams come to fruition. My blog is a recording of those dreams - as well as reminder to live life fully, without an off switch.

This interview was published on Monday, October 31, 2011.

What do you do when you're not blogging? What is your job?

Katie: I work part time at a library, and spend the rest of my days working on freelance graphic design jobs. I also keep busy with my small business set to open online in a couple months, as well as other creative endeavors.

How would you describe your personal style?

Katie: Honestly, I wear what I feel comfortable and confident in. It's really that simple. Nobody's personality can be pinned down by a few terms and neither should their style be. I'm constantly changing, and so are the clothes I wear - which is why I'm such a fan of buying second-hand!

Where are you from and what are your top three favorite places to shop in your city?

Katie: I am a born and raised Midwesterner, residing in a Western suburb of Chicago, IL. I'm a huge fan of the Anthropologie sale rack, H&M, and of course - I love the thrill of thrifting!

3 fun facts about you:

Katie: I grew up with two older brothers, love the TV show Vampire Diaries, and one of my favorite things to do is make my mom laugh.

Biggest style splurge and/or deal:

Katie: I recently scored an authentic alpaca cape (think "Sound of Music") for $8. Needless to say I'm excited to be able to wear it this Winter!

How are you able to stay fashionable without spending a lot of $$? What are your tips and where do you shop?

Katie: These days I'm trying to save some money for more important things than clothes. For that reason I love shopping at thrift stores - as well as the fact that it gives me a (much) bigger thrill over retail. But don't count out estate sales and garage sales! They're full of hidden gems too!

In your opinion, every woman should own:

Katie: A brooch. Not what you were expecting me to say? That's the beauty of the brooch! People don't wear them as often as in years past, but they add a touch of sophistication and whimsy that can't be ignored. Pick one up at your local antique store and give it a try!

Three things that are always in my fridge:

Katie: Goodness, I could talk about what is inside my fridge far longer than I could what's in my closet. Ha! Some favorites would be peanut butter, eggs, and fruit.

What's your latest obsession?

Katie: The past few months I've been working hard on starting an independent magazine focused on inspiring readers to try new things and pursue their dreams. I'm beyond excited for it to launch this Winter! And to say I'm obsessed is a bit of an understatement...

Your most prized possession?

Katie: Now that's a tough one! I'm pretty fond of my teak wood desk and chair that I purchased at a garage sale for $50 a couple years ago. It's gorgeous, sleek, and modern.

What is your favorite thing to do on a lazy Sunday?

Katie: If I have one on hand, I love to pick up a good book and read for hours. Otherwise, cooking up some scrambled eggs, working on a jigsaw puzzle, watching a movie, returning emails and discovering new favorite blogs, roasting veggies...those are all things I love to do at home on a Sunday.

People would be surprised to know that I...

Katie: talk in goofy voices as a source of entertainment. It's the little things...
