An Interview with Erica of North Meets South

I'm Erica, and I blog over at North Meets South, a silly blog about me, my style and my life in Manhattan. I currently work as an accountant while my husband goes to law school. We love life in the city as we explore this place we call home!

This interview was published on Monday, October 03, 2011.

How would you describe your personal style?

Erica: Ever since I started fashion blogging, my style has changed a ton and is constantly evolving. Right now, I love a good mash-up of feminine and masculine, vintage and modern. I like to have fun with what I wear, while still being office-appropriate. (corporate stiff right here!)

What would be the one fashion tip you would give to a friend?

Erica: Make sure you are comfortable in what you wear. It doesn’t matter how beautiful an item or outfit is, if you uncomfortable wearing it, you will hate it.

What is your fantasy splurge?

Erica: A beautiful evening gown, all bedecked and bedazzled like I was ready for a royal ball. Basically, it's my grown-up version of wanting to be a princess.

3 fun facts about you:

Erica: I am the second oldest of seven kids (6 girls and 1 boy with a 20-year age spread). I got a bruise on my calf while playing soccer in 2004, and you can still see it. At the age of 6, I threw a fit for an hour when my mom told me to wear a dress.

What are you currently grooving to?

Erica: I’m in love with Maroon 5’s new single “Moves Like Jagger.” I got their first album back in 2003 and have loved them ever since.

What inspires you?

Erica: Fashion wise, I get a lot of inspiration from blogs, clothing stores/websites and of course, Pinterest. I don’t read fashion magazines because they are so un-relatable, and the same goes for high fashion. I love seeing people who styled themselves in clothes I would buy and wear.

Biggest style splurge and/or deal:

Erica: My biggest splurge was my Anouk boots that cost me $260 (but were originally $600!). I spent months searching for the perfect boots, and when these went on sale on Gilt, I snatched them up. My biggest deal was a Kate Spade sheath dress I purchased for $2! It has polka-dots!

How are you able to stay fashionable without spending a lot of $$? What are your tips and where do you shop?

Erica: Thrift stores, clothing swaps, gift cards and clearance racks are all ways I stay on budget, and mine is practically nonexistent. I shop at thrift stores, H&M, and Target, but I love window shopping at J.Crew and Anthro for inspiration.

What types of items do you like to save $ on and what do you splurge on?

Erica: I only splurge on 2 things: good shoes (I walk everywhere in the city!) and a good down coat (but even that was on sale). Everything else I know I can get at thrift stores or on clearance somewhere.

What are key pieces from your wardrobe that you find yourself wearing over and over?

Erica: My thrifted navy pencil skirt, my thrifted grey Seychelles pumps and my Anthropologie pink cropped trousers. I also attend to reach for button-ups and cardigans, either together or separate.

Do you have any comfort foods and what memories do you have associated with them?

Erica: Homemade chocolate chip cookies. My older sister and I would make these every Sunday; we could even make them from memory! We would take a plate of cookies and 2 glasses of milk to our parents and chat with them. Nothing is more comforting and homey than warm chocolate chip cookies.

If you had a time machine that could take you back in time- what year would you go to and why?

Erica: I would go to August 14, 1945. I would walk into Times Square, march right up to a sailor, and him right on the lips. All while wearing a nurse’s uniform, of course. ;)
