An Interview with Rania of Fashioning Faith

Hi, Everyone! Salaam. My name is Rania. I started a style blog, Fashioning Faith :: Hijab. Style. Fashion. Inspiration., in October 2009. It specialized for Muslim women and that is intended as an inspiration and a helping guide for Muslim women to be smart in styling what they wear, so they can look fresh and stylish while covered up.

Muslim women's style is covered. We, as a Muslimah, believe in modesty and hijab (in term of fashion, it's a veil or headscarf and jilbab for women). I view hijab as a fashion opportunity rather than a restriction. I love my hijab. I believe that modesty has its own style, and within Islam's mandate of modesty, the styles are endless.

Hope you enjoy my blog! :)

How would you describe your personal style?

Rania: Eclectic. I love to mix-and-match and select the best thing from various looks. I can look sweet-feminine-elegant, and at the other times I look boho-casual.. :)

What is your nerdiest hobby?

Rania: Reading books... :)

What would be the one fashion tip you would give to a friend?

Rania: Don't get caught up in what looks good on other people. Try to find your own style that you're comfortable with and can expresses your personality.

Where are you from and what are your top three favorite places to shop in your city?

Rania: I'm from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. My top three favorite places to shop as far are Karita Muslim Square, Kiswah, and Mirota Batik. There, we can find beautiful, edgy clothes, modest stuffs and headscarves, in affordable prices.

3 fun facts about you:

Rania: I can have and wear one pair of shoes for years! :), I like to change my headscarf-wrapping each day and love to try a new style, and thirdly, I'm an easy-going person... Sounds fun? :D

What is your favorite dessert?

Rania: I love almost all desserts.. haha, but my favorites are ice cream, pudding and its vla, black forest or opera cake, and fruits juice.

Favorite item of clothing in your closet:

Rania: My choco ruffle blazer, my long-sleeved black maxidress, my sleeveless grey minidress with a big bow at the neckline, and of course, my various headscarves.

What types of items do you like to save $ on and what do you splurge on?

Rania: I like to save money on shoes and bags, and I splurge it on outerwear and scarves.. haha.

In your opinion, every woman should own:

Rania: A maxi dress... It shows a feminity and an elegance of a woman.

Do you have any comfort foods and what memories do you have associated with them?

Rania: Chocolate. Fun memory about it is me and my kids enjoyed our time together whilst we’re eating chocolate.

If you could go on a road trip with any person (dead or alive), who would you choose and where would you go?

Rania: I wouldn’t choose just one person, but I choose my family: my husband and the children.. :) We can go to a natural place, like beach, lake, or mountain, that we all love to. Along the road trip, we can talk about anything that we didn't have a chance to talk to before.., and spend time having fun together. It’s a very rare thing the children can have with their father.

What is your favorite thing to do in the summer?

Rania: My country only has two seasons, rainy and sunny. On Sunny days, there are so many fun things we can do. My favorites are biking and going to the swimming pool or beaches with the kids. Kids also love fishing. Or, have a picnic at Kaliurang (Mount Merapi's area). We have mountain and beaches here.. :)
