An Interview with Georgia and Christie of The Velvettes
The Velvettes are two passionate young ladies from New Zealand. This is a blog about their love of vintage and opshopping, adventures, and 50mm lenses. Sundered by Cook Strait in 2012, they continue to document their whimsy and debauchery.
How did you come up with your blog name?
Georgia and Christie: We are a couple of young things who both love velvet, so it made perfect sense!
Who or what has been your greatest fashion influence?
Georgia and Christie: I can speak for Christie when I say hers would be Stevie Nicks, but I don't think I can pick one for myself! My style is a little bits-and-pieces-y.
What would be the one fashion tip you would give to a friend?
Georgia and Christie: Don't listen to anyone else's opinions on the way you dress, just do what you love. It's a waste of time trying to please everyone, so focus on pleasing yourself. Fashion 'rules' are silly and arbitrary anyway- if you feel good, you'll look good.
Where are you from and what are your top three favorite places to shop in your city?
Georgia and Christie: We're both from Christchurch, New Zealand, a city which has been ravaged by earthquakes. Most of the good shops are gone, but our favourite Two Squirrels Vintage lives on online: http://www.etsy.com/people/TwoSquirrelsVintage. Other than that, little thrift stores are dotted all over the city.
3 fun facts about you:
Georgia and Christie: 1. I can lick my elbow. 2. I bought my first piece of vintage at age 12. 3. I make an amazing curry.
What inspires you?
Georgia and Christie: The internet! Or, more specifically, all the beautiful images of stylish ladies that are constantly floating around the blogosphere. I am so grateful for the 'net for allowing me to make connections with so many gorgeous well-dressed babes.
What types of items do you like to save $ on and what do you splurge on?
Georgia and Christie: I save on accessories, as I find it's not too hard to find a cute handbag or hat in a thrift store for a pittance. As for splurging, I would gladly spend $500 on a pair of shoes if I could get a guarantee they'd last longer than a year. Anyone?!
In your opinion, every woman should own:
Georgia and Christie: A good sunhat.
What are key pieces from your wardrobe that you find yourself wearing over and over?
Georgia and Christie: My breton-striped tshirt that I thrifted for 50c has been absolutely thrashed. It goes with everything, and looks especially good with floral full skirts.
4 things you can't live without:
Georgia and Christie: Sunscreen, thrifting, folk music, and my dear boyfriend.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Georgia and Christie: Musicals!
Do you have any comfort foods and what memories do you have associated with them?
Georgia and Christie: Definitely Indian curries. My parents have been feeding me curry since I was a baby, so it always evokes strong memories of my early childhood, like sneaking out of bed at nice to steal forkfuls from the leftovers in the fridge.
Three things that are always in my fridge:
Georgia and Christie: Blue cheese, wholegrain mustard, and a good craft beer.
