An Interview with Carly of Strawberry Heels Forever
Hi everyone! I'm Carly from Strawberry Heels Forever, a blog devoted to all things fashionable. I started a blog to offer a glimpse into the life of a 28-year-old teacher living on the prairies in Saskatchewan, Canada. I'm surrounded by so much beauty every single day: in my closet, my environment, and in my life. I wanted a space to share my gratitude and passions with other women. Coco Chanel said, "The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.” I consider my blog a space where I can think aloud, and where others can join me in that courageous act.
What do you do when you're not blogging? What is your job?
Carly: I’m currently a music teacher for children in kindergarten and grades 1 – 4. My teaching degree is in Arts Education, so I am passionate about all of the fine arts. I’ve been a dancer my entire life, and I also play guitar. This summer I’m planning on signing up for some pottery lessons.
Who or what has been your greatest fashion influence?
Carly: My grandma owned a clothing boutique, so when I was young, she let me dress the mannequins and work the old fashioned cash register. When I got older, she taught me about merchandising and styling outfits, and she let me put together outfits for her clients. I learned so much from her!
What would be the one fashion tip you would give to a friend?
Carly: Don’t be afraid of fashion! Take risks! Try mixing patterns and textures, and if it doesn’t work then try again. Also, don’t spend a lot of money on trends. Invest in the classics, but buy your trendy pieces at inexpensive places like H&M, Joe Fresh, Target, or Forever 21.
Three things in your closet you cannot live without:
Carly: 1) My purse. It’s just beautiful! It's made up of all these colourful strips of recycled leather. 2) A pair of boots. Living in Canada, a stylish pair of boots is a must for the cold winter days! 3) A quirky printed dress. Dresses are the easiest thing to wear, and I adore a fun print!
What is your favorite dessert?
Carly: I’m not really a sweets person, but I do love my grandma’s ginger snap cookies. She’s been known to send them to me in the mail in a giant box for Christmas!
How are you able to stay fashionable without spending a lot of $$? What are your tips and where do you shop?
Carly: Recently I've been trading clothes with my blog readers. It’s a great way to give new life to my closet without spending anything! I've also learned to be patient and wait for sales. Fashion is always a season ahead, so that summer dress you really want will be on sale before you know it!
In your opinion, every woman should own:
Carly: high heels that make you feel like you could conquer the world.
What 5 items do you always have in your purse?
Carly: In my purse right now is some Clinique lip gloss, my cell phone, a snack, my journal, and a vintage harmonica I recently picked up at a yard sale. You never know when you’ll need a harmonica!
What are key pieces from your wardrobe that you find yourself wearing over and over?
Carly: I have a blazer from Aritzia that I wear constantly. Because it's so structured, I love the idea of mixing it with feminine pieces like a romantic lace dress or soft blush tones. I almost never wear pants, I'm a skirts and dresses kind of girl! I have beautiful dresses that I wear over and over.
Your most worn perfume/lotion:
Carly: My favourite perfume is Oiseau the Charmer from Anthropologie, and my favourite lotion is Fresh Brown Sugar from Sephora.
Your most worn piece of jewelry:
Carly: I wear my wedding rings every day, and I also have a ruby ring that belonged to my grandma. After she passed away, my mom gave it to me, and now it holds a very special place in my heart. Recently I bought a really neat vintage bicycle brooch that I got for $0.25 at a garage sale!
What is your favorite thing to do in the summer?
Carly: I love to have barbeques in the back yard, eat purple popsicles, and ride my bicycle!
Do you have a favorite YouTube video?
Carly: Currently my favourite YouTube video is the one where the mother cat starts hugging her baby kitten close to her while they're asleep. I’m such an animal lover, and this video is too adorable! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vw4KVoEVcr0
