An Interview with Mallory and Whitney of Whit Wat Wear

We are two college roommates who giggle too much to take serious photos together. Our blog title, WhitWatWear, comes from different parts of our names.

This interview was published on Friday, April 22, 2011.

What do you do when you're not blogging? What is your job?

Mallory and Whitney: We are students at UC Berkeley studying Molecular Environmental Biology. When we aren't blogging, we are usually studying or bumming around Berkeley getting ice cream with our other two roommates. We occasionally watch scary movies, although one of us(...Whitney) keeps her eyes closed.

How would you describe your personal style?

Mallory and Whitney: If we had to describe them, Mallory’s style is more classic with a hippie twist, while Whitney’s is more urban with bright colors. Those sound really silly in writing haha. We do have overlapping taste though, and liketo think our styles are complimentary.

What is your nerdiest hobby?

Mallory and Whitney: M: crosswords. I love crosswords. Last time I was at the airport, I bought a book of NY times puzzles, but the only one they had was, “Keep Your Brain Young”...my friends make fun of it. I feel like a bit of a grandma when I whip out my puzzle book on the metro. W:KOREAN BOY BANDS

What would be the one fashion tip you would give to a friend?

Mallory and Whitney: Dress in layers. It’s not only practical, especially for the weather in the San Francisco Bay Area (it tends to get cold at night!) but it also makes you look more put together. Plus, it’s always fun to mix colors and coordinate layers.

What is your fantasy splurge?

Mallory and Whitney: M: Chanel’s ginkgo necklace from the spring-summer collection. I love anything nature-inspired, and ginkgos are one of my favorite trees (yes I have a list of favorite trees). W: Currently I really want the Alexander Wang Diego Rose studded leather bucket bag. I have been really into bucket bags!

Three things in your closet you cannot live without:

Mallory and Whitney: M: Riding boots, a perfect fitting pair of skinnies, a long jewel-toned cardi. W: a chunky scarf, simple long-sleeve, and also skinnies.

What are you currently grooving to?

Mallory and Whitney: M: Glee’s version of Bills, bills, bills. Sooo good. W: Jack Johnson - Banana Pancakes!

Favorite item of clothing in your closet:

Mallory and Whitney: M: Zara cape, it’s a great alternative to the classic winter coat. I am sad to put it away for spring. W: Sequin top from my mom.

Great fashion steal:

Mallory and Whitney: M: Crochet top I thrifted last spring, traded some a couple old shirts for it. W: While in Shanghai, I bought a lot of inexpensive tribal jewelry from street vendors. I learned to bargain!

How are you able to stay fashionable without spending a lot of $$? What are your tips and where do you shop?

Mallory and Whitney: Thrift shops and online! Thrifting takes a lot of time to go through all the racks, and we need eachother to help edit. We like Crossroads Trading and Thrifttown in SF. While procrastinating, we like to online shop at Anthropologie/Asos.We add items to our cart and wait for them to go on sale.

What types of items do you like to save $ on and what do you splurge on?

Mallory and Whitney: We like to splurge on bags, but save on everything else. Nice bags can last a long time; we like to tell ourselves that they are "investments." Everything else we usually only buy things used or on sale. It’s always exciting when we find something unique from a thrift store!

One trend you would like to never see again is:

Mallory and Whitney: Those furry boots that were popular a couple of years ago, they give you mammoth feet.
