I was just googling for new materials available in making bags when I stumbled upon a site which talks about the use of water hyachith leather. So finally, a leather which doesn't come from animals. I honestly didn't know they exist. Amazing!

As far as I understand, leather is a material that came from animal skin. While water hyacinth is really a very nice and good alternative for bag material, it is not leather either. The thing is, you can have bags that are "natural" that need not come from animals but plants instead. The Philippines is one country with many designs.

Well, I guess this water hyacinth bag changes the definition of leather then. There's animal leather and then there's plant leather!

I have to see it up close to know if I'll like water hyacinth leather but it'd be great if this solved the issue of molds. I'd also need to see other designs -- honestly, the one in the picture isn't that great. :P

I have always loved water hyancinth products, whether they are bags, baskets, or any form of craft, but I have never heard of leather made from water hyancinth. This is something new, maybe a product of another technological innovation. Additionally, this is also a good news. Ther is no need to kill animals just to be able to product leather.

So is water hyacinth really leather or just a different type of plant fiber like raffia?

Checked out some more water hyacinth bags. These don't look anything like leather:
