I came across this article that says horizontal stripes actually make you look thinner rather than wider, as we always thought. This study was conducted by Peter Thompson of the University of York and is based on the Helmholtz square illusion where two identically sized squares were painted with horizontal stripes and the other vertical.

In Thompon's study, he had 200 pairs of same size women wear horizontally and vertically striped dresses and asked people to pick which of the two they thought was fatter. Result? The one with horizontal-striped dress was often perceived to be thinner.

You can read more about the study in this article. After that, tell me what you think. Do you really believe that horizontal stripes make you look thinner? I still see a lot of people wearing horizontal stripes and they are more widely used in fashion rather than vertical (or that's just me?).

Here's a sample of a dress with vertical lines. I have to admit that while it looks nice, it's less appealing than the other dress in my post above.

Interesting study. Do you have a link to that article?

I personally prefer horizontal over vertical stripes because I find vertical stripes too referee-ish. I would also wear vertical stripes only if they were pin-thin like on the guy's shirt in the picture you included.

I think the same goes for horizontal stripes actually. Horizontal stripes can make you look thinner if they were pin-thin rather than thick and wide.

I think horizontal stripes tend to look nicer, but I don’t know if they make you look thinner. They look nicer because the stripes don’t break, unlike when vertical lines are used, they break to accommodate the waist as it tapers there and vertical lines sort of warp when stretched at the bust area. Since horizontal stripes look more well-constructed and they make a lady look nicer regardless of size, they may be misconstrued as “thinner.” Hmm hope that was clear! ^_^

I’ve read somewhere before that it’s not just the direction of the stripes, not just about whether they’re horizontal or vertical. It’s also got something to do with the size of the stripes. I also noticed that the fabric and cling also matter. If the fabric is too clingy, it’s not gonna be flattering, regardless of whether the stripes are vertical or horizontal…

Oh, sorry I forgot the link. You can check it here.

It's pretty much still an open study. Even the doctor who did the study says it's not a fully proven, but it's not disproved either. I guess there's still a lot of factors to consider when dressing. Bottomline, he says, stick with black and less lines! :P

Thanks for the link bailey. Just finished reading it and now I'm more confused than ever.

There really are a ton more factors to consider if a garment makes you look fat or not than just the stripes themselves. First thing that comes to mind is how the garment fits! Sealed

I think that when it comes to fashion, there are no fixed rules. The things we read, such as how stripes can either make you look thin or fat, are just guidelines. And there are other factors at play to make us look either thin or fat. :)
