I've admired the wedding dress of Fleur Delacour in the movie "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part I)". While searching for a picture, I came across this article saying that costume designer Jany Temime *may* have been *inspired* by Alexander McQueen's peacock dress. "As promotion heats up in preparation for the November 19th release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One , costume designer Jany Temime has given an interview to the Los Angeles Times talking about the inspiration behind her magical designs. Unfortunately it appears that the only magic that went into the design for Fleur Delacour's wedding dress was the dark art of forgery. The elaborate, layered tulle dress with over-laid lace design which Fleur (played by Clémence Poésy), wears for her marriage to Bill Weasley is - how can we put this delicately - a blatant rip-off of an iconic Alexander McQueen dress from his autumn/winter 2008 collection, a blunder which didn't go unnoticed by hawk-eyed blogger Lela London." Read more. See the image. As much as I love HP, I'm liable to think there was some copying done. :( |

I forgot to add the McQueen dress. My bad.

Saw this before and the first thing I thought was, why didn't they just ask McQueen for the dress instead of copying it? I'm sure they would've obliged; it is for Harry Potter after all!

The designer probably thought that no one would notice. Which is really quite silly because 1) it's Harry Potter. There are a lot of fans and many eagle-eyed viewers who will definitely spot it. The similarities are too close to be coincidental. No comment on both the Potter camp and McQueen camp still? |

I actually like the longer knockoff version better. :) Love me some McQueen but that longer dress would be more flattering! I wonder if there are brides out there who also copied this Harry Potter/McQueen dress for their own wedding? Given how many Harry Potter fans are out there, I'm sure there's bound to be at least one! |

I agree. The longer version looks better. I can't get the idea of wearing a poufy, balloon skirt and have it end mid-leg. As a Harry Potter fan, I'd definitely add this dress to my list of wedding dress inspirations. I'll probably change the color of the peacock/phoenix detail, but everything is quite nice as it is. Clémence Poésy is so lucky to have worn it haha. Wish it would look as good on me. |

Funny you mention that about dresses that end mid-calf, because I was recently in Europe and noticed that this is the new popular length for dresses and skirts! I couldn't believe it - to me it seems rather matronly / grandma-ish and odd to see young, fashionable girls out and about in, but it's definitely a big thing over there. I wonder if the trend will come to the states?
Here's an interesting article about what they're calling the "midi" (as opposed to a mini or maxi): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-473411/The-new-trend-mid-calf-length-skirts-dividing-fashion-world.html |

I suppose it would depend on the cut & style of the dress, and what are the other accessories/pieces worn with it. Say for example if the top is low-cut or a tube. I wouldn't mind a calf-length dress if it was flowy or something like a summer dress. But a gown? Seems weird to me. |

Oh no! Harry Potter used a knocked off dress?! Surprising!! I mean, yeah, they could have requested a longer version of the original dress instead of creating a new one without permission. So, any update on this issue? I am curious. |

I like the look of midi skirts but only if it's figure-hugging or lays flat against the body. As a poufy cocktail dress, not as much, because (1) it would make me look short and (2) its not as flattering. I think thin girls could get away with wearing a poufy midi skirt though. Pair it with a cute cardigan and a graphic t-shirt ala Carrie Bradshaw. :) |
